hi all,

please find in the following an interview with Roy Young from TRANSPARENT ILLUSION. we hope it will answer many questions that you may have:

ANNA: Which synths/drum machines did you use for your productions respectively in general?

ROY S.: I used a KORG MS-10 and used drum sounds from it.

ANNA: Where does the name TRANSPARENT ILLUSION come from?

ROY S.: I got TRANSPARENT ILLUSION from a dream I had.

ANNA: When did you start with TRANSPARENT ILLUSION and how long did the project exist?

ROY S.: I started in 1980 till 1981.

ANNA: Was it a one-man project or did you work with others? (Note: The 7inch states 2 other persons: JON GOODMAN & AERIAL)

ROY S.: It was a one-man project. I made the other names up.

ANNA: Can you give us a full biography & discography (including tapes & records) respectively timetable of your musical activities (mainly in relation to synth based music, but other styles are of interest, too)?

ROY S.: I was interested in GARY NUMAN.

ANNA: Do you hold photos, articles, and so on from your active time in the 1980´s ?

ROY S.: I never had photos taken and no articles.

ANNA: Do you still make music?

ROY S.: I don´t make music now.

ANNA: “Vortex”/“Nuclear Release” (7inch) & “Still Human” (lp) - How many copies were pressed for each of these productions?

ROY S.: The 7inch had 500 pressed and so did the lp.

ANNA: Do you still hold copies of the 7inch / lp?

ROY S.: I don´t hold any copies.

ANNA: Do you hold the original master tapes? If not, do you know someone who does?

ROY S.: The master tapes are lost.

ANNA: “Guilty Rich Men” (7inch) & “Chagrin Receiver” (lp) - The book “International Discography Of The New Wave 1982/83” states, that a 2nd 7inch called “Guilty Rich Men” and a 2nd lp called “Chagrin Receiver” was foreseen to be published in 1982, but apparently never was (Note: These records respectively copies have never surfaced).
If this information is right, what was the reason for them never being released? Furthermore if this material does exist, do you hold the original master tapes of this un-published material? If not, do you know someone who does?

ROY S.: “Guilty Rich Men” and “Chagrin Receiver” never got recorded due to lack of sales from “Still Human”.

ANNA: Bootleg (7inch) “Vortex” & “Concepts” - These tracks have been published a couple of years ago on a bootleg 7inch. We would like to know, whether these tracks are original TRANSPARENT ILLUSION tracks respectively composed by you. Note: From our point of view these tracks are not new, they sounds like different versions from already known material on the “Still Human” lp.

ROY S.: “Concepts” and “Vortex” are my tracks.

well, that’s at least one myth busted (ie the 2nd LP). Good to know although I would have preferred it if he’d made more music.

Marc you HAVE to tell us more on how you tracked him down, I know LOADS of people have tried over the years and never gotten to him, and you mention snail mail… so you can’t have found him on the net?

first of all, it was not me who found him, i couldn’t have. it took Jochen (he is a member or at least follower of this forum) more than two years of time- and cost-intensive, almost professional, research. therefore it is only up to him what he wants to reveal from his detective work journey. but, to be frank, i think it is not our duty though to teach people how track down lost human beings, is it? so i won’t tell any further apart from what will be written in the promotional text and on the accompanying postcard. btw, we are looking for further hard-nut-to-crack-cases so better leave this dirty job to us

Chapeau to Marc and Jochen!

It just took 20yrs. to track him down and these guys made it. :D

I wonder where you´re going to press the re-issue from, if the
master is lost? Please no further reprint from vinyl.

Cheers
Alex

Amazing !!!
many thanks to Marc and Jochen!

It seems lots of legendary records are re-issued these last years… Exp.Products LP, Eleven Pond LP, Dark Day LP, ... now Transp. Illusion…
80’s is back wink
It’s nice to see that music becomes available for everyone, anyway hope that some collectors are still seaking for the original ones…
I hope grin

... I’m totally agree about this question!!!
In any way the sound need to be carefully mastered to overcome the original one. I trust Marc will do the best but if came from vinyl will be a hard work.
Just to say as for example, the sound in new EXP.PROD “Tracks To Glow In The Dark” LP is worst at my ears than the original “Experiment” or “Glowing In The Dark ” maxis for example. The originals are better to my taste.

Anyway, I have the original TRANSP. ILLUSION LP and will buy for sure this re-press !!! It’s hard for the pocket to be a collector wink

Well ,we all would like to own first pressings, but nowadays they are just so overpriced.I remember some years ago when I could find first pressings at somehow decent prices. Those days are gone. Now I only find high buy it now prices in mostly all online platforms..
