thanks for that kind overview. actually i was having the one with the bonus 12” and now i do remember that yes, the best tracks were on there, i think i remember they were instrumental, and very good, must check if i still have it at home rolleyes

now am i actually curious about that ambient thingy that you mention as i didn’t know about it yet. i am actually listening to a lot of ambient or calm electronics, and i do really love some works of Nocturnal Emissions for example (Stoneflesh, Magnetized Light, Mouth of Babes,.....), or more recent bands like Raison d’etre, or even more recent Nature Morte (on TUT/RUR). but one by one….

Also I have a heavy Cabaret Voltaire (their pre-bleep era) flashback for a last week, these guys were so damn ahead of their time..

strangely i never found much access to or interest in CV - i once bought their Crackdown album from 1983 and didn’t find it much entertaining. a song here and there from samplers then, but i only got electrified with “Automotivation” that i know from Various - The Tyranny Of The Beat - Original Soundtracks From The Grey Area.

so what is THEE cv album/tracks to hear that justifies their cult status ?

Besides everything that was already said above you should check their 12” singles, those extended mixes are far superior to the album ones.. Not your typical mid-80s “all drum machine congas/bongas breaks for 10 minutes” twelve-inch mixes but truly work of mixing and engineering art. I guess “The Original Sound Of Sheffield 83/87” cd compy might be a good start.

Speaking of their rather industrial output, you may start with “The Original Sound Of Sheffield 78/82”. smile Early classic seven-inchies like Seconds Too late, Silent Command, Nag Nag Nag (of course), etc. are all there.

Cabaret Voltaire - Three Mantras

Heh, this is interesting: I borrowed this CD from my brother, what, 2-3 weeks back, and I’ve been to busy + forgotten to listen to it - he loves this and nearly forced it on me when we were talking about it.

So when I checked the forum now and saw this debate it was interesting to see what Cabs fans like and where this LP goes in the canon… It’s two long tracks, from the trio lineup, January 1980, and it’s easy to hear that these are the people responsible for Nag Nag Nag (even if this is not _that_ good).

While I’m on this thread - as you see in the case of Alphaville recently, the poster doesn’t need to explain anything in order to set off some sort of discussion over the item at hand. White Out Conditions, meanwhile, is a Bel Canto LP that I think should be in every home. That means buy two and give one to your mother.

It’s your typical 90’s ambient fitting in perfectly with all those well known acts like The Orb and what have you from that dreadfull era.

Tobias Schmidt - Easier

just re-discovered this fantastic track

... in my Opinion a perfect intersection between “minimal techno” and “minimal synth”:

Well, that’s not among my favorites of them.. The only thing I’m really curious about it is where is the third mantra as there are only two on the album. smile

about Cabaret Voltaire: I like them a lot too, but their output is rather uneven… they’ve produced some of the most amazing electronic music of the 70’s/early 80’s, but the quality of their releases is sometimes hit and/or miss.

My favourite by them is the “2x45” release!

right now I’m listening to:
CLICK CLICK ‘Rorschach testing’, from 1988.
They’ve pretty much left the EBM-influence behind them on this release, which may or may not be a good thing (depending on your personal point of view). I myself like this album a lot, because of its disaffected and sometimes even desolate atmosphere. Stylistically pretty hard to compare to other bands, although their sound may at times remind of a more minimalist and less poppy (early) Psyche. Or maybe even a more modern sounding version of A Blaze Colour - check out the tracks “Playground” and “What a world” and you will understand what I mean.

oh yes CLICK CLICK ... they were awesome. apart from the ‘fact’ that EBM is most probably the most ridiculous genre term ever (at least in electronic music), they never belonged to it, did they? also only them being present on the familiar “This is Electronic Body Music” sampler still doesn’t qualify them to be an EBM band (that counts for most bands on that sampler actually, no? or would anyone count Chris & Cosey, Parade Ground or Skinny Puppy as EBM bands ? anyway, i always loved CLICK CLICK for their ultra gloomy atmosphere, great sense of sounds and also being different due to the unique voice. thanks Claudia, as this evening i will put a CLICK CLICK record on when working on Anna, hehe.

i am actually sitting in the bathtub right now listening to

MARSHEAUX - e-bay queen CD.

this girl duo from Greece is great. i like their first album best though, full of 80’s synth pop nostalgia and melodies. anyway, all their three albums are lovely and so nice to listen to. did you ever hear their track “Radial Emotion” from their last album? if not, do so!

I saw them “live” this summer and I think they are just two stage beauties and the music is done two guys in the background. Although I like the first album very much, I didn’t like the performance at all.

Marsheaux huh?
thanks for the tip; I’ve heard of them before, since I’m an OMD fan, and a pal here in Oslo showed me the cover for their second album (featuring a nice bag to pull over your head, a thing many people could do with I assure you!) - in fact I didn’t know it was the same band until i saw a video on youtube featuring the bag :-D

Following the youtube link, I found a rather weak cover of She’s Leaving, and from there I found some crap mash-ups of OMD with other stuff. Can’t see the point in a mash-up anyway, and most of the time it’s either a record I don’t like played over one I do like, but even if I like both I prefer hearing them after each other. Silly stuff…

ha! that is very interesting, as ..... i had the very very same feeling when i heard them the first!!! i felt there is some masculinity in there, but now i know about it. actually the music IS composed and played by the two girls! but there is a greek production duo behind doing the fine-tuning. one of them told about the talent of those girls, and i like that image of girls actually NOT just being there for the eyes. in believe in this case it is true that these girls could stand on their own, even with a more unpolished sound.

OMD

yes, i heard about that, but truly they should be measured by their own compositions, not on a cover .... did i ever mention that “Photographic” was the best track that solitude fx ever made, hahahaha!
