They’re shrinkwrapped.
Don’t think the originals ever were

I guess it’s not that hard to turn a shrinkwrapped record into a non-shrinkwrapped one, isn’t it? wink

these re-issues are rumoured to be pressed on 150g vinyl and I doubt the originals were that thick (I never had any of the originals unfortunately so I can’t tell 100%)

Also, you saps, the shrinkwrap is to show the customer that the LP is unplayed, so at least some of these will still be shrinkwrapped when you find them.  8)

I’m sure D’mark is right, that the originals were not on heavy vinyl. I’ll check later if noone else does.

But still, I think the easiest way to tell the pirate pressings (yes, Spartak) from the originals is that they are new. Stick your nose in the cover, it’s supposed to smell of dust, probably tobacco,  bargain basement, old shop owner… If it smells, and the edges of the cover look slightly used, too, then bingo! You check the vinyl.

Also at this point they still are very white, never seen a Snowy Red cover that was this white.

All the covers I have seen of the originals (first two LP’s) are a bit greyish, but not pure white.

This shrink-wrapped bit just made me think of one of the funnier stories of my professional life:

I once had a guy from France complain that in his shipment a harddrive was missing.

In order to prove this he wanted to send me the empty box.

Back to the topic: on principle it should be pretty easy to tell a new one from an old one here, unless of course the art of speed-aging sleeves has seen some major development of late…. 8)

Well, thanks y’all for the input but I was looking for some more objective criteria, in case you find a copy online and want to ask the seller a question.  I don’t think paypal will offer a refund on the criteria: looks new, doesn’t smell dusty, white is too white and as a mercy blow: shows probable traces of shrinkwrapping rolleyes

1) Ask what the color of the sleeve’s innerside : should be grey, not white.
2) Ask what’s been scratched in the runout groove : should be only the catalogue number.

Yikes! Read this the day after ordering this (assuming it’s the bootleg, or has it been reissued? $25 is a bit less than 40 euro!):

Artist: SNOWY RED
Title: s/t
Format: LP
Label: Dirty Dance
Country: Europe
Price: $25.00
“Snowy Red was a one-man minimal wave outfit from Belgium, active throughout the 1980s. Though occasionally a band here and there (and featuring scattered collaborators during their tenure), Snowy Red was primarily an outlet for Micky Mike (real name: Marcel Thiel), who released four records, and two cover records under his proper name before seemingly disappearing from the music scene in the early nineties. Ultra limited reissue of this very rare legendary 1980 first LP” - Dirty Dance.

Permanent Records in chicago now stocks these, pricing them at $15! They do mailorder.  Its possible this is a US bootleg. It could explain why they list for 25 euros through other vendors.

They do, but only the second LP (good price though) and not the ST LP. Anyone know where you can get the re-issue of the ST album? Seems to be a lot more illusive than the second for some reason!

Why spending money on bootlegs, knowing that an official re-issue will be done in 2011 ?
