Yeah, that’s what I meant with “so much to choose from” with the result that you might not feel as strongly about it.
Already in the eighties there were many musical styles to choose from, but there were also still many many tribes, like teddy boys, mods etc.
So you could pick your tribe of choice and the music you would listen to would be part of that “us against all those idiots out there” feeling. Your battle hymn or whatever you might call it.
Growing older then is about discovering that the world is not black and white but shades of grey, about differentiating, compromising etc.
This is all very well but the part before just felt so much better 8)
My guess is many young people are missing out on such a phase today.
Of course most of them won’t miss it either as they don’t know what they’re missing.
There might just be some vague idea in their heads that it could be different and more exiting…..
