Last week I noticed that at least half of the CD-R titles I bought from Trupmett have started to degrade.  The Ende Shneafliet SPLEEN concert gets really noisey in track 5 adn won’t play track 6 or beyond.  The Doxa cds I have and the Actor 2xCD-R are the same way, really bad digital noise/break-up and not being able to play the entire disc.  Luckily I think I can get decent rips of them to wav files and burn new copies.

Anyone else notice this problem?

re: Trumpett CD-R problems

With CD-Rs in general, yes.  It seems to happen to all of them if you wait long enough.  Damn shame, too.  (If I’d known that, I might have reconsidered the CD-R reissues I made and went to printed media instead).

i noticed that some brands degrade less, i have cdrs from tdk and verbatim that are for example very stable and last 10-15 years.

and i put a note on my web site at Anna’s that people should create a backup copy of any CDR as - to be honest - it is well-known fact that they degrade some day.

i wonder anyway why anyone produces CDRs, as making proper CDs is not really more expensive if you keep the artwork etc minimal, or like stored in a simple transparent sleeve. no-one should sell CDRs, i won’t do no more for sure (i noticed myslef too late and did it once, though at least it was duplicated at a professional plant).

does this back-up via wav really work ? i should give it a try then as lots of music has been rusting here over the years as well…

I’ve been using itunes to make wav files from the cds.  So far I have gotten all of them to load and rip, but I haven’t checked the quality.
