Drums are the one instrument I can’t even begin to play, but when my friend got his Synsonics drums (when they were brand new) I bashed the hell out of those!  I haven’t been able to find another in good shape. All I have left now is my Korg DDD-1.

id like to get one of the legacy controllers second hand, strip the guts out and put in a real analog synth.  84% size ms-20 with 100% ms-20 sound?  yeow!

I’ve had the Legacy collection for a few months now.  There’s several things I like about it, like the “hidden” adjustments in the software that make the range of sounds even greater than the original MS-20 (which I played happily for years). 

The keys on the replica are motion-sensistive (!), and certain settings are polyphonic (!!), two things I would love to have had in the original unit.  The ability to use sounds from the other two synths, controlled from the MS-20 replica, in the suite at the same time, is a real plus.

My one misgiving is the computer hardware power necessary to shave the latency down to an acceptable level.  The “recommended” PC hardware which Korg has enumerated in the manual, and which I’ve exceeded narrowly, has a latency of approximately 4/10 of a second.  That’s deadly if you’re trying to play the note on time. 

I’ve got an option of trying this software on an iMac, which may perform better in the latency department.  I’ll write back here with the results if y’all are interested.

I think they’re certainly some bad points in this legacy as well, as other instruments and things in this world…what are they? Any idea? I’m also interesting in getting this legacy, here i can purchase it for 130 euros but i’m still hesitant.

I had horrible latency problems with all the VST instruments I tried.  I’m using a standard Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop with 500mb of RAM and a stock soundcard.  I was told to grab a driver called asio4all (http://www.asio4all.com) and that seems to have cleaned up my latency issues.  Granted, I am only using this for fun and to sketch out ideas.  I’m too nervous about bringing my laptop onstage where it could get covered in beer.

Also, my copy of the software is a “fully functioning demo version” so I don’t have the controller to go with it.  I’ve just been using a crappy Oxygen8.

Thanks for that link, Ollie: the description on their web page looks promising.  Much better than transplanting the software and hoping the latency is acceptable in the new box.

Echo, the latency is the only serious issue I’ve had.  There’s an occasional irritant when I load the recording software first (ProTools) and it appropriates the USB controller for itself.  If I load the VST first then all is well.

I agree, Ollie, a beer-proof laptop would be ideal.  You’d need a sealed keyboard, and all of the vents & fans facing down so no fluids could pour through them.  There were some Toshibas made for Maytag servicemen that were very well sealed from moisture and were resistant to external shock, but that was back in the mid 90s.  Those laptops would be best used as prototypes for building a beer-proof performance-ready laptop for VST instruments.

I had the real thing till my studio burned. None the less the vst sounds pretty good…free if you look around too.

I have the Korg Legacy Collection and it sounds pretty accurate to my Polysix. That is apart from when you set the resonance quite high. Then it sounds nothing like. Also the MS-20 can’t scream like the MS-10 does when peak is at max. Does the real thing?
