[quote author=“cr-78”]Pieter,

You know I do my share in this sunny ghetto.

Personally I wouldn’t dare to doubt it.

And my guess is Pieter was talking to “carlosrossi” instead?

[quote author=“edenwave”] I can put on some chet baker, ken nordine, absolute body control, white stripes, can, the kills, the chameleons, lcd soundsytem, manic street preachers, ladytron, joy division, the flow, broder daniel, the walkmen, rancid, bush, nirvana, the knife, placebo, the beatles, elvis, medio mutante, oviformia sci, los prisioneros, Bronco, Land Of Giants, Luis Armstrong, Thierry Muller, DAF, Keren Ann, Fishermen, Mika Miko and ENJOY IT all the same.

; )

Yeah, that’s what I meant with “so much to choose from” with the result that you might not feel as strongly about it.

Already in the eighties there were many musical styles to choose from, but there were also still many many tribes, like teddy boys, mods etc.

So you could pick your tribe of choice and the music you would listen to would be part of that “us against all those idiots out there” feeling. Your battle hymn or whatever you might call it.

Growing older then is about discovering that the world is not black and white but shades of grey, about differentiating, compromising etc.

This is all very well but the part before just felt so much better 8)

My guess is many young people are missing out on such a phase today.

Of course most of them won’t miss it either as they don’t know what they’re missing.

There might just be some vague idea in their heads that it could be different and more exiting…..

Now, my experience is more in the noise, experimental, industrial world, but - ha ha! - I am more than old enough to have experienced aspects of the minimal world the first time around and I am quite used to working in a tiny ghetto of a music subgenre.

The main, valid argument that I pulled from this is not about age, music subgenres, Internet usage, record collecting, file-sharing, etc.

I think that it is more about actually doing something in response to a perceived lack of local activity, events, options (but fuck it just being local - it can be regional, national, global)... rather than simply complaining about it.  Active versus passive.

These are personality differences.  Not everyone wants to expend the effort to start a band or a record label, become a DJ or a promoter, etc.  And even if you work really hard to build a scene, some people will still complain that your events or your releases are too expensive, the venue you chose is inconveniently located and the drinks cost too much, the songs that you spin aren’t right, the bands suck, etc.

The passion to make things happen will help to continue to drive some people forward, beyond the indifference, the low turnouts, the detractors, etc.  You are not doing it for them.  You are doing it for like-minded people and those open-minded music fans who are willing to explore.  Some scenes will always stay small.  Some will bubble up for a while and then go back to their obscure little corner.

I am enjoying how lately, I am seeing one small scene bump up against another small scene, and interacting on some level.  That, to me, seems more like the late-1970’s and early- to mid-1980’s spirit.  I am all for the cross-pollination.

That’s all for now.  No criticisms… just a nod to anyone who is actually doing something out there.

I think it’s funny how everybody goes for another piece of this thread

If your main point is the motivational bit, of course I agree that whining is for idiots and that actions speak louder than words.

But then it has to be said that what definitely went wrong here is the actual process of motivating someone.

Two people voice their interest to organise something and are being “motivated” by being exposed to Pieter’s famous speech about all those sad male internet zombie virgins glued to their computers out there.

I’m sure it’s all been good intentions with Pieter being an idealist and all, but sorry, I didn’t come across as altogether too motivating 8)

So let’s hope something fresh will appear on the menu in L.A. soon. Although I’m not quite sure I will be able to attend, I’m afraid….

OK calm down everyone we’re just having a nice discussion of some of the problems with contemporary music and support for it no need to freek out Jesus…

As I said my comments weren’t directed at any one in particular, Eden, Carlos or any one posting, apologies if you took it that way Eden, but were simply a response to a growing frustration I have felt for as long as I can remember with people being less than pleased with their local music scene and new music in general and then basicly simply giving up and saying: ‘Aw noone would come even if we tried to have a night anyway so why bother fuck it…’  This resignatory attitude, so prevalent in big cities in the US in particular is precisely what keeps music spiralling downward, down, down.  Its sort of like the frequent situation in which you hear a friend is making a huge effort to host a great evening of non-commercial underground music a few blocks from your house, then you not attending to support because you say you have to ‘do your laundry’ or the like, yeah right… happens all the time here…I also think the European situation is very different and perhaps not comparable as so much great music and musical activities occur in smaller isolated towns in Germany, Belgium, Holland etc. so perhaps it is difficult to communicate the specific situation here in major US metropolitan areas which caters towards noone doing anything to create new musical activities.
All I was getting at was to encourage all who have the knowledge and interest to share it with others in an attempt to make the musical world more exciting.  If it fails miserably so what you tried…and I guarantee even if it does in your eyes you’ll have a lovely evening playing great music to a couple of your close friends who will deeply appreciate it.  But if you simply sit there and do nothing, you’ll never know what if…?

And so I’ll remember you,
I’ll remember the days and the thousands of ways you pulled me through,
And dream of all the things you’ve seen,
Of all the faces and all of the places you have been
