So, I know many of you want to know how to get rich, also how to get a cooler record collection.
A cooler collection is obtained by “modding” your rare records in this way:
1. Flip the cover of the collectable LP/ single/ CD/ cassette so the back side faces you
2. Grab a blue BIC pen and write “PROMO” in small, yet clearly visible lettering
So, when you have done this to your own collection, you might want to do the same for your spare copies, since this will heavily boost the value of your sale items…
Meanwhile, to those of you who don’t have a pen handy, would you like to own an A.B.C. promo?
[quote author=“falck”]But then again, you’d get TWO incredibly rare promos for those rather modest USD 110,-...what you think, one for you, one for me?
And if we’re nice to the seller, he might even add the numbers to these hand-numbered promos
...what? Sorry, I wasn’t listening, I was busy making my John Bender “Plaster Falling” LP number one in a limited numbered edition! I have to say, it looks amazing.
Exprods “Prototype” was pressed in 300 copies, right? Let’s see, if I write “1/300” on the back cover, it should be the Ultimate Exprods Collectable, right? I’m thinking silver felt tip, what do you say?
Furthermore, if this is not a joke, don’t you think that the value of collectible records would decrease in value if one is caught selling the aforementioned items?
I guess you could try a little lighter fluid to get the marker off.. works like a charm.
Anyways, don’t worry, we’ll never get found out. Elvis wrote such a bad hand in such an erratic way that two of the world’s most foremost calligraphers already committed suicide…
Reactor, could you get me that big black marker, please?
Yes indeed, very much unlike Che Guevara and Jim Morisson, Elvis was already alledgedly dead in 1983. Told you so Oyst, people might be more suspicious than we thought :o
But nevamind….anyone for a Twilight Ritual promo signed by Napoleon? League of Nations in its original shroud of Turin wrapping? Oh come on people, buy one and I’ll thrown in a - I meant THE - holy grail….
And you should continue your search for a private tutor who will teach you about this wonderful secret realm of humor….there’s entire world out there waiting for you once you’ve grasped the concept :D
Well in the light of our prior conversations, I guess I failed to recognise that you had taken to the thing in the meantime. My mistake, my most sincere apologies, just keep them coming…. :D
Yes, I’ll have three of the blue ones and two of the red ones, thank you very much.
[quote author=“Spartak”]Wasnt Elvis already dead and buried by the time REK released that 12”?
OTOH i dont think your target audience will take note of such minor details.
Fact: Most Elvis autographs were written by his manager and his PA! the King would write some, true, but the others trained to do his handwrite and got it so close to the original, that even the experts have problems telling.
And if my Tapes of Darkness is autographed by five different people, who are you to tell me that’s not the original bassist’s handwrite? Or indeed any of them? :-D
@ cath: Yes you found me out. I think it’s completely ludicrous to charge $110 for two copies of A.B.C’s “lost/ found” just because you’ve had the inventive idea of writing “PROMO” on them in blue pen. Even stickered promo CD-R’s are practially worthless on the collector market, simply because they are nearly impossible to authenticicate. (Authenticate? I dunno.)
i am sorry for you all.
first at all it seems you all don’t know the details of what you listen to as those 2 promos from ABC dcd’s on sale on ebay are NOT fake or handwritten by the seller (me).
if you send a message to the label who did the regular numbered pressing (you need its name at this point?) you will discover they had some promos (so not numbered) spare copies.
i saw the “regulars” ended at 35-40 euro, you blame me to sell them for same cost including shipping worldwide?
hm…

The “hm…” was the best bit of the whole post.
It’s not relevant WHO put the handwritten “PROMO” there. The point is that this writing makes the item less valuable not more. A WOC is a WOC no matter if it says “Happy holidays, love dad” or “Promotional item”. It’s a practical solution for the label, who probably don’t have a massive budget, to divide the items sold for cash from the items given out free to boost those sales.
In the mid-90s, it was for a short while common to mark promotional CDs by clipping a hole in the front cover of standard stock copies. If you had tried to sell such clipped items as “Special promo copy, buy two for the price of three”, I would have ridiculed that as well. That’s just me.
As for blaming you, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt; they’re not sold just yet
