seem guaranteed. A Flock of Seagulls, Ultravox, Simple Minds or likes never sounded anything like “minimal”, but I saw them labeled as such :-(
Which makes the search on ebay even more time consuming.

On the other hand I always used this label for my items on ebay to find as much bidders as possible. For Spoon Fazer, Inertia, Ciaran Harte or Snowy Red etc. I always perceived this label as suitable and pinpoint.

Back in the mid to late 80s, when I started collecting, people always called it “minimalelektronik” or likewise “minimal electronics”, but never ever “minimal synth”. As forementioned the “...synth” tag is just little shorter and makes more sense on ebay;-)

I dunno, I don’t see the negative connotation.

It’s the same as “KBD Punk” named after Killed By Death compilations, years and years after the music was made.

It’s a convenient way for people to find it.

It’s very dangerous to name a music with both label MINIMAL SYNTH or COLDWAVE if the music you create can be only viewed as MINIMAL SYNTH or COLDWAVE by people . Things will never evolved in this case . Put a name on Music is OK , stay in a cage is another Thing . MINIMAL is a good way to sell records on Ebay ; but ELECTRONIC or EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC are better words for Real Musicians ( those who make the Music = those who count ) , and not Fake Poseurs .

Electronic… well, all music being made now is electronic though, isn’t it? Rock bands and r+b, we all use protools…

As for experimental, if there is one thing that can NOT be said about the minimal scene, it is that it’s experimental. The fans like a certain sound, musicians try to find the same equipment, play in the same style, it is really anti-experimental if you think about it!

Minimal, to refer to the minimal electronics scene, and Synth to distance it from the minimal techno scene, or (as on this site) Wave to link it to the new wave period. At least it’s functional.

I don’t think so , most all bands today use only guitars and the synth is behind every contents ( I don’t want to name bands here ... ) . When it’s complete electronic , -most of the time(not everytime)- the music style that uses synth in front is synthpop . I don’t like this square 4/4 pattern way of doing music . Also , i don’t use protools or whatever . I play all hand by hand ( analog way// errors are what make the salt in Music for me ) , so , you see we are not all using protools , if I don’t ...

That’s very different > ‘melodic glitches’ from ‘la la la’ . But , i guess , everyone has its own definition of what any Style is or not . That’s possibly the best answer I can give to this topic , my friend .
At the end , those -different views we have- are what renders people’s difference interesting . Don’t you think , so ?

I don’t think we’re really so far apart actually - When I talked about ProTools, I was commenting on the word “Electronic”, not “Synth”... Synths are a type of instrument, ideally with a sound of a certain kind, “electronic” or “electronics” are not.
Electronic equipment has been the norm in music recording the last 20 years. Most famous rock groups edit their recordings in Protools; sample and sequence and quantize them - enhance them electronically, sometimes to the point where it is technically “electronic” music, although not sounding like synth music…

As for music being “Experimental” - if it is truly experimental, it can not belong to a genre! It’s like saying, “oh, this or that band is Different Wave”... “one of the best Different bands”...

-But anyway. As you say, although not in so many words, it’s just my 50 cents. :wink:
