Berliners,

Have you found any especially good forums (bars, cafes, etc.) for listening to minimal wave? Just thought I would ask! I know the Remembrance Daze bar nights play some post-punk, but I don’t know to the extent that it plays minimal wave… ideas?

Liebe Grüße,
Carla

I only imported myself but I will answer nonetheless

My mate Hazi is running the occasional Angstpop party but the MFE venue burned down in January and the one in the Steinhaus in June seems to have been a one-off. So strangely Angstpop mostly happens in other places these days (e.g. Leipzig).

You will also get to hear some minimal stuff at the Orlog parties at the Dunckerclub on Monday.

And if you look on http://www.etoile.de, there’s Digital Eye Shadow this Saturday, haven’t been yet myself but the Myspace page looks promising.

Lastly, I recommend that you get on the mailing list of Das Drehmoment.

Übelst jeile Grüße,
falck

Thanks for the reply, Falck. Some good ideas in there.

Yesterday, I went briefly to the King Kong Klub with some friends from out of town and have to say that I wasn’t as excited as I had hoped to be with the music. The Remembrance Daze nights play “post punk, minimal, and goth,” but the music was a bit more mainstream than I hoped for (Gang of Four’s “I Love A Man In A Uniform,” Talking Heads, Soft Cell, etc.). Perhaps my expectations are just too high for what can actually be played in a bar (or that the term post punk is just too broad and the dj and I had different internal definitions of what that meant)! I just know that I would love to sit, talk to a friend, sip my drink, and listen to some dark and dirty minimal wave here in town. smile

Well, I will try to stop by tomorrow at Digital Eye Shadow, but not sure it will happen. Strangely enough, Momus is doing a reading at proqm at 21:30 and I am interested in what that will be like…

Grüße,
Carla

Well, as this world is so small, I fear it might come down to “if you want a minimal wave cafe in Berlin, have you ever thought about opening one yourself?”

Well if you do, please make sure it will be in/in the vicitiny of Schöneberg, I’m starting to adapt to the Berlin habit of not wanting to leave one’s kiez if this possibly can be avoided.

And BTW, as I am not an expert on these things, now which bands would fall under the sub-genre of DMW (Dirty Minimal Wave)?  8)

I would if I had a venue, especially because I have started buying things recently on vinyl, but I wouldn’t even know where to begin with that… if you have any ideas, let me know (preferably near Mitte, my Kiez)!

“Dirty” was actually stated in opposition to cleaner, more smooth sounding music. I tend to like the darker, more “f-ed up” sounding minimal wave that appears more thrown together than planned, although still very melodic. Exmaples: Gelatinous Citizen, Dark Day, Twilight Ritual, Kas Product (hm, does that even count as minimal wave?), Bernard Szajner (“The Big Scare”), Neon, Drinking Electricity, etc. But I do think it could be a subgenre! Some of the “happier” sounding minimal wave just doesn’t appeal to me. smile

Grüße,
Carla

Alright, so you meant raw & uncut then, not sordid & pornographic. Oh well, some disappointment there.  8)

I guess “Sex Dwarf” or “Voyeur” would have been good tracks for instance for the DMW/DMS genre, and the Insomnia a good place to listen to them on one of their special nights.

Now I can’t see why Kas Product shouldn’t be minimal wave, they used guitars so they’re not minimal synth, and even if they used to be so young and so cold at some point I’d struggle to label them coldwave.

And anyways, if you followed all those threads with unhappy buyers voicing their frustrations, it is simply amazing how incredible broad that minimal synth/minimal wave umbrella has become these days…. 8)
