Hello.

I would like to start a general discussion on documentaries.

I just finished watching a docu called Die letzten Männer (The Last Real Men), about Austrian men aged 40 and up, who marry Asian (mostly Philippine and Thai) women through agencies. Their reasoning being that Austrian women are “too emancipated” meanwhile their SEA counterparts are very loyal and just overall more housewifey.

A quote from the film: “They’re faithful and would never get in my friend’s car without me.”

A quote from the plot summary on imdb: Asked about the positive properties of their Asian spouses, the answer of the Austrian husbands quite often is, “They don’t talk back.”

It was shot in 1994, on tape, so it has that extra shitty homemade feel. What’s really bizarre about it is the guy who made it interjects scenes of himself practicing martial arts. Like so,

There are also strange shots of the men doing things like sawing wood, welding, running water into a bucket. It’s all totally senseless and very bizarre.

Highly recommended.

So has anyone seen any good docus lately? Any recommendations?

I saw this Norwegian documentary about Jerry Lee Lewis’ family a few years ago and thought it was quite surreal.

Searched for it to see it again but I don’t know were to get.
