Based on Quality and Quantity

To me the U.K. is beyond #1

I would say the U.S. is #2

Canada/Australia tie for #3

Germany is #4

Belgium #5

France #6

Netherlands #7

Sweden #8

Italy #9

Switzerland #10

That’s what I think.

What do you think?

obscure

What abot finland then?

The best synth records from Scandinavia is in my personal taste the Argon Lp Kone Kertoo and the Lp from Organ - Nekrofiilis, Finland must be in the list!

But Switzerland? guyers, yello, what else even came from la Suisse?

And even if they tie on third place, they’re still two countries so you made a Top 11 list. Easy to get confused I suppose grin

I was thinking about the Eastern European stuff, but I guess there’s not a lot of absolute top notch items, although Czechoslovakis and Jugoslavia had more than their share of good stuff…

Can anybody explain to me what’s the use of making this list of countries ?
Are we promoting nationalism, patriotism etc. ?

Not just minimal synth is all about that.
Life is all about that but since life is changing I am against this way of looking at things.
I rather promote more holistic views. That’s why I commented here.

Oystein,

Since there was a tie its still a top 10.  Those two countries are technically at the same rank.

Switzerland-  Grauzone, Starter, Vyllies, Yello, Guyers Connection, and many more obscure greats.

Ton,

My ranking is my ranking.  Its definitely not about nationalism or patriotism, because I am the last person to promote any of that.  It is just about being neurotic, and categorizing what countries you think are great in terms of minimal synth records.

When I said what do you think?  I was asking for others top 10’s.  I’d like to hear them whether they are slight variations on my own or completely different.  So far the only outcrys were for Finland, and against Switzerland.  I don’t own the Argon or Organ records so I can’t argue against that.  I can only say that that is only two bands though that are top notch from that country so does Finland deserve to make it to the list.  And if so where should Finland go, and what country should be removed.

Anyway, what are your top ten countries?

obscure

mine would be:

1. UK

2. USA

3. France

4. Belgium

5. Netherlands

6. Germany

7. Canada

8. Sweden

9. Italy

10. Norway

UK or USA on #1 is a very difficult choice, a close race IMO.

Germany is relatively low ranked because in spite of the massive output i’m not a huge fan of the NDW synth music, and the neurotic “saal 2” type of minimal synth.

Netherlands is ranked relatively high because of patriotic and nationalist sentiments.

And according to Spartak: Norway 1 point! grin

Obsteve: Actually, I didn’t remember that any of those were Swiss, apart from Starter which I didn’t even know were Swiss.

Of course, then Noise Boys is also Swiss. Point taken!

It was a close call between denmark & norway oy! also japan shouldnt be underestimated, dangerous outsider!
Actually, I thought dc-p was danish (although released on a swedish label)...anybody know?
oy, i’m sure you can distinguish between both dialects smile

i’m wondering though stephen, why you put canada and australia so high? even both combined they wouldnt be in my top 3.
And if it werent for the seminal ceramic hello lp i wouldnt have put canada in my top 10 at all. refresh my mind what amazing minimal synth canada has outside CH & IKO (which is overrated anyways IMO)?

curious for your favorite countries oy, spill the goods!

But if i take into account the importance of bands, like kraftwerk, DAF, LD and perhaps cluster, germany would rank much higher (#1)!

what I really don’t like about most of all that uk stuff which turned out to be a favourite of many is that it sounds to me like good old pop songs with choruses, bridges, etc. just played on analogue keyboards.. as I’m more on the weird side of things, I surely love the analogue sounds coming from the continent much much more..

anyway my all-time favourite bands are DI6 and Joy Division, both from England smile

ps. speaking of the swiss bands how could one forget Schaltkreis Wassermann!
