It all depends on what you want out of your music.  If as a performer you find one method easier than another then go with the one that allows the creativity to flow more freely.

I recorded a ton of stuff in the late 80’s using a Poly800, CZ-101 and an MMT-8 and that was great fun.  Now I find it easier to use Synapse Orion and a few VST analog synth modules for composing.  Since I don’t perform electronic music live the snob value of having authentic gear doens’t matter to me.  Sure, I’d like a MiniMoog, an MS-20 and a swarm of Wasps, but I’ve got a mortgage to pay and student loans to pay off.

And really, how is playing stuff out of a laptop any more of a track show than a sequencer running 4 synths via MIDI?  Same thing in my mind.

yes this topic is leaning more towards the aspect of playing live. midi for composing is great. I use it for my classical compositions. my first couple of shows I would write my own drum tracks on a sequencer linked to an analog keyboard for a couple of songs. unfortunately this interface gets stuck a lot and its just pointless.. its much fun to play live without backing tracks. as for mortgage payments, everyones got them. you dont have to have an ms 20 or an 808. with $500 you can have a decent set up. as i said before. they are 2 different worlds.. the difference between viewing a painting after its done.. or viewing it as its being made…

not to reopen wounds or commit thread necromancy..

but I would think that if one was trying to do this sort of music style, whether in the studio or live, most of the fun of it would be using older gear and shelving the complicated newfangled boxes.

That’s not to say that you can’t or shouldn’t use newer equipment, but for less than 500$ you can get a pretty neat setup and I would think that intrinsically it would be fun to explore another workflow rather than mimic it.

That’s also not saying you can cheat a bit and use electribes, sequencers (RMX1 etc) and hyrbids such as the poly800, sx60, dw 6/8000 etc. either..

bit over all I think most of the fun would be to step out side our modern perspectives a bit.
